Seasonal temperature gradients within a sandy seafloor: implications for acoustic propagation and scattering

چکیده

Seafloor temperatures measured during the SAX99 experiment off Fort Walton Beach, Florida, included sharp decreases in response to the passage of cold fronts. Sediment pore water temperatures exhibited an increasing temperature (3-4o Cm) with depth in the sediment. By fitting a heat conduction model to the gradient data, the thermal diffusivity of the sediment was estimated to be 0.006 cms. The effects of seasonal variations of sediment thermal gradients on reflection and scattering from the sediment-water interface are found to be significant at frequencies near 1 kHz but diminish at higher frequencies.

Bottom Interaction in Long Range Acoustic Propagation

Analysis of data from the NPAL04 experiments has shown that there are three principal types of arrival in long-range ocean acoustic propagation: 1) arrivals predicted by PE model calculations (RR, RSR, RBR, SRBR ray paths and the mode-like finale region), 2) deep shadow zone arrivals arising from the spread of energy below PE predicted turning points (caustics) and attributed to internal waves ...

Acoustic propagation analysis in the front of saline water mass in the Gulf of Aden

Background and Objectives: Influence of water mass on sound propagation in the Gulf of Aden underwater acoustics used for communication, navigation and identification of objects by both humans and marine mammals and for investigating the detrimental effects of anthropogenic activities (e.g. pile driving, seismic survey and ships) on marine animals. The Gulf of Aden presents a unique ecosystem t...

Parallel implementation of underwater acoustic wave propagation using beamtracing method on graphical processing unit

The mathematical modeling of the acoustic wave propagation in seawater is the basis for realizing goals such as, underwater communication, seabed mapping, advanced fishing, oil and gas exploration, marine meteorology, positioning and explore the unknown targets within the water. However, due to the existence of various physical phenomena in the water environment and the various conditions gover...

Feasibility of Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS) of Atlantic Cod with Seafloor Scattering Limitations

Recently reported declines in the population of Atlantic cod have led to calls for additional survey methods for stock assessments. In combination with conventional line-transect methods that may have ambiguities in sampling fish populations, Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS) has been shown to have a potential for providing accurate stock assessments (Makris N.C., et al. Science 2...

Excitation of T-phases by seafloor scattering.

T-phases excited by suboceanic earthquakes are classified into two types: abyssal phases which are excited near the earthquake epicenter at seafloor depths far below the SOFAR velocity channel, and slope T-phases which are excited at continental, or ocean island slopes and ridges at distances up to several hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter. In this article, it is demonstrated that appro...
